I've been keeping a list of random/funny/interesting/weird things I've learned so far in my first couple days here. I was going to wait til toward the end of my trip to post this sort of list, but it's gotten kinda big so I'm going to share it now. :)
Regarding vehicles..
- Gas is $0.10/gal - yes, you read that right, 10 cents!!
- Traffic rules (lights, right-of-way, lane markings) are only suggestions; the pushiest driver wins
- Horns are honked often and loudly
- Motorcycles constantly drive between cars
- A 10-year-old used car costs equivalent of $15,000 American
Regarding accommodations...
- Everything is open to the air
- Hot water is not standard; window a/c in bedrooms is more essential
- Wi-fi/internet is flaky at best
- You don't realize how important it is to have a light in the bathroom until you don't have one
- Hammocks are incredibly comfortable!
- A bed with a 4" mattress directly on a futon-ish bed with bars across it is not very comfortable
Regarding food...
- It's always time for coffee (I have tried a few kinds; some are palatable to me, a non-coffee drinker)
- Bottled water is my best friend and I should take it everywhere
Other randomness...
- Use bug spray all the time, because even indoors is outdoors
- People are fascinated with Venezuelan flags painted on toenails
- Laptops make great flashlights
- Next time, bring a flashlight and a washcloth
Hope you enjoyed my random list... possibly more to come as I learn more! :)
