Step of Faith

Taking this trip is definitely a step of faith for me, and I want to share my story with you.

I have never gone on any sort of missions trip before, unless you count a couple Habitat for Humanity spring break trips in college. Traveling overseas for missions was never really something that was on my radar, until recently.

Here's how this adventure began:

Starting last fall, the small group I'm part of was reading through the book Radical by David Platt. I highly recommend this book, for both "new" and "experienced" Christians; it will definitely make everyone think! At the end of the book (which we got to around the end of January), it offers the Radical Experiment - 5 things to do for one year:
  1. To pray for the entire world
  2. To read through the entire Word
  3. To commit our lives to multiplying community
  4. To sacrifice our money for a specific purpose
  5. To give our time in another context
When I read #5, I immediately felt the Spirit speaking to me that I have to do that this year! On the heels of that thought, it occurred to me that as of July I will have 3 weeks of vacation time from work, since I will have been there 5 years. Perfect!

So I started exploring. Being part of a Churches of God congregation, I started with the denomination's Cross Cultural Missions department. It just so happens I know the people who work there, so it was an easy connection to make. We started discussing various trips and possibilities, but nothing seemed right just yet.

Then just recently, I got an email about a trip to Venezuela in August. I don't have many details about it yet, but I needed to make a decision so they could order a ticket for me (or not).  After some consulting with family (since I will be gone over my 31st birthday) and a lot of prayer, I'm going!

There is *no* way I can afford the trip on my own, however, so now my fundraising begins. The total cost should be in the ballpark of $1800 so that is my goal. Please check out the info on my sidebar here if you feel led to contribute to my cause - I greatly appreciate it!

This is going to be a great adventure, and I'm definitely excited about it. I'm going to try to keep this blog updated, both with my fundraising status and with any new developments about the trip. Stay tuned! :)
